The big news this week is that the installation of the system of boiler, tank, pumps and valves that will provide hot water to the radiant heating system and the Monsoon Room (aka multi-headed master bedroom shower) is going from this:
To This:
Needless to say, I am very pleased with the progress.
Before we start getting visits from the IAEA, let me assure Mr. ElBaradei and his staff that the large blue tank is NOT a part of a of nuclear reactor, but only a very well insulated tank holding nothing but deliciously soothing hot water. No need for any inspections, but they are welcome to drop by for a relaxing bubble bath as they fly back and forth from North Korea to Iran.
While we are on the topic of crossing back and forth, let me put in a word or two about the bridge. With the addition of hand rail posts and a few sheets of plywood standing in for the metal decking, the bridge is now in actual use allowing easy access to the top of the hill in the back yard across a 30'void.
Thanks to the easy access provided by the bridge, construction of the concrete footing for the deck continues apace:
On the structural front, we had some additions, and some subtractions. On the addition side, transverse beams (the short ones running front to back in this picture) were added to the ceiling below the deck to further provide strength and to support the master bedroom deck.
The subtraction is a lot more interesting. Since the house was originally built, a big vertical beam in the middle of the garage was holding up part of the house. The beam is the one painted white and located to the right of an unidentified person in the red sweater in this picture (also note the old horizontal wooden beam the vertical beam is supporting):
Now, the old horizontal wooden beam is replaced with a shiny yellow new beam and the vertical beam has been relocated out of the garage into the framed wall on the right.
The upshot of all this is that for the first time since the house was built, it is actually possible to park our two cars in the garage. Of course, all bets are off if I want to park the HMMWV in the garage.
Next week: even more concrete, the deck, and more plumbing.
